Kernel update
The NK8237 Kernel is the main component of the operating system, which acts as
a bridge between the application and the hardware level.
In certain conditions, it may be necessary to update the Kernel, following specific
instructions of the technical support. In such cases, you can use the
NK8000Kernel_Update Setup.msi tool that is available in the NK8000 - Support
Tools folder of the DMS8000 DVD.
The tool is provided as a Microsoft Installer file (MSI) and can be easily installed on
the Windows system that can connected to the NK8237 unit on the IP network.
Once installed, the NK8000Kernel_Update application can be started from the
Windows Start menu. The following window appears:
Updating the Kernel
To update the Kernel:
1. Enter the IP address of the NK8237 to update.
2. Set the FTP Mode to Active (default) or Passive (needed if a firewall is active in
the PC).
3. Click Update Kernel.
At that point, the tool performs a number of preliminary checks. Namely:
It verifies whether the NK8237 firmware is compatible with the new Kernel. If
not, a message will instruct you to download a new firmware and try updating
the Kernel again.
It verifies whether the existing Kernel is older, the same, or newer then the new
Kernel and prompts you to confirm the update.
It verifies whether there is enough free memory space to install the new Kernel.
If not, the NK8237 configuration will be temporarily removed to free memory
space. You will be prompted to choose whether to restore the configuration at
the end of the Kernel upgrade or not (the latter can be useful to save time if you
are upgrading the system and are going to download a new configuration from
Composer).
It verifies if an SD card is inserted into the NK8237, to install the NK823x Web
Server [➙ 58]. If the SD card is not inserted, you can abort the update and
insert the SD card, or complete the update without installing the NK823x Web
Server, then insert the SD card and repeat the Kernel update to install the
NK823x Web Server only.
The Kernel update may take several minutes. Make sure not to power off the
NK8237 unit or the Windows computer during the updating procedure.
If needed, you can show the Kernel version by clicking the About button. Note that
two Kernel versions are presented that are automatically selected for the
NKM8001-A1 or the NKM8001-A2 mainboard, respectively.
