Introduction and Safety
Introduction
The RL family of low voltage circuit breakers is designed to
meet all t he applicable ANSI, NEMA AND IEEE standards.
Successful application and operation of this equipment
depends as much upon proper installation and maintenance
by the user as it does upon t he careful design and fabrication
by Siemens.
The purpose of t his Inst ruction Manual is to assist t he user in
developing safe and efficient procedures for the installation,
maintenance and use of t he equipment.
Contact t he nearest Siemens representative if any additional
information is desired.
A DANGER
Power circuit breakers operate
at
high
voltages and have spring- loaded
mecanical parts which operate at high
speed.
When operated improperly, this equipment
will cause death, person injury and
property damage.
To av oid elect ric al shoc k , burns a n d
entanglement i n moving parts t his equipment
must be installed, operated and maintained
only by q ualified persons t horoughly familiar
with t he equipment, instruction manuals and
drawin s.
QuaUfied Person
For t he purpose of t his manual and product labels, a
Qualified Person
is one who is familiar with t he installation,
construction and operation of t his equipment and the hazards
involved. In addition, this person has the following qualifica
tions:
•
Training and authorization to energize, de-energize,
clear, ground and tag circuits and equipment in accord
ance with established safety practices.
•
Training in t he proper care and use of protective equip
ment such as rubber gloves, hard hat, safety glasses,
face shields, flash clot hing, etc., in accordance with es
tablished safety procedures.
•
Training in rendering first aid.

Signal Words
The signal words
"Danger•, "Warning•
and
"Caution•
used
in t his manual indicate t he degree of hazard t hat may be
encountered by t he user. These words are defined as:
Danger
- Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which,
if not avoided,
will
result in deat h or serious injury.
Warning
-
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which,
if not avoided,
could
result in death or serious injury.
Caution
-
Indicates a potentially hazardous situation which,
if not avoided,
may
result in minor or moderate injury.
Dangerous Procedures
In addition to other procedures desc ribed in t his manual as
dangerous, user personnel must adhere to t he following:
1 .
Always work on a de-energized breaker. Always de-ener
gize a breaker, and remove it from t he switchgear before
performing any tests, maintenance or repair.
2 . Always perform maintenance on t he breaker after the
spring-charged mechanisms are discharged.
3. Always let an interloc k device or safety mechanism per
form its function without forcing or defeating the device.
