2.4 SOFTWARE COMPONENTS
2.4.1 The GV Platform
The Outstation software package comprises a number of distinct layers as shown in
Figure 2.3).
Redboot
takes control at startup and controls the boot-up sequence.
eCos
is the embedded operating system.
GVP
is an intermediate layer which provides common facilities (e.g. file system)
and a common programming interface.
Applications
use the services provided by GVP and eCos to implement user
functions e.g. MOVA and OTU.

2.5 UTMC COMMUNICATIONS
The connection between Instation and Outstation is by an IP network. Refer to
Appendix F for a guide to UTMC and refer to Appendix G for IP Network Requirements.
The connection of the Outstation to the network can be via the Gemini
2
modem port or
via Ethernet. The Ethernet port could be directly connected to the IP network, or
additional devices could provide access via DSL, private wires, fibre, wireless or UMTS
mobile comms connections.
