6 Turbine Operation
6.1 Overview
The Windy Boy is a single phase inverter that converts DC current into AC current and
feeds the energy generated by a wind turbine system into an existing grid.
The Windy Boy is externally identical to the Sunny Boy inverter for photovoltaic systems.
The Windy Boy does, however, have a special operating mode for wind turbine
systems and water turbines, which makes it possible to adjust the output to the
characteristic curves of many different manufacturers' wind turbines ("Turbine"
operating mode). In this way maximum yields can be obtained from your wind turbine
system.
The mechanical power output of the wind turbine is fed into the Windy Boy in the form
of a rectified, rotation-speed-variable DC voltage (RPM) and current intensity (torque).
Most small wind turbine systems have a so-called permanent magnet generator and a
downstream rectifier for converting the variable-frequency AC voltage from the
generator into DC current.
6.2 Characteristic Curve Function
The "Turbine" operating mode of the Windy Boy uses a programmable power/voltage
curve to regulate the input current depending on the generator voltage.
One characteristic of a wind turbine system, is that it provides an optimum working point
for current and voltage corresponding to the present rotation speed or wind speed. This
behavior is not linear.
The Windy Boy uses an approximation based on a combination of even functions.
These functions can be programmed by the user so that they correspond to the behavior
of the wind turbine being used, thus enabling a power adjustment.
