DVI-D
stands for
Digital Visual Interface - Digital
. It is a kind of DVI connector that only supports digital video signals, so no analogue video
signals. It has 24 pins.
A
DVI-I
connector (
Digital Visual Interface - Integrated
) supports digital video and analogue video signals. It has 29 pins
.
So depending on the monitor you want to connect, you need to connect to a different connector and you need to use a different cable:
- You can connect a
DVI monitor
both to a
DVI-D connector
and a
DVI-I connector
using a
DVI-D to DVI-D cable
.
- You can connect an
analogue RBG monitor or projector
only to a
DVI-I connector
using a
DVI-I to VGA cable
.

You can not connect a DVI-I to VGA cable to a DVI-D connector!
