Chapter 4 – Troubleshooting
This chapter discusses common problems that may occur during operation and offers some
methods for identifying the cause and solving the problem.
There are also some electrical checks that you can perform in order to locate problems, which
are also described here. If the source still does not work, you need to remove it from the cham-
ber and perform a visual inspection (anode, water cooling systems, etc). Please contact SPECS
support for further assistance.
The UXC 1000 displays an error message if there is a problem. These error messages may
help you to identify the problem. The UXC 1000 manual contains a full list of all error mes-
sages.
4.1
High-Voltage Sparks
The most common problem that occurs during the operation of the XR 50 is high-voltage spark-
ing. There are a number of reasons for this. If HV sparks occur, the power supply will switch off
the HV and go into standby mode. At the beginning of operation and after venting or after repla-
cing parts, some sparks may occur. Normally the occurrence of these HV sparks will decrease
over time.
Note
The risk of sparking is significantly lower when the high voltage is set to 12 kV rather than the
maximum of 15 kV. The output intensity from the source is not much higher at 15 kV compared
to 12 kV.
Danger—High Voltages Present!
It will take 3 minutes before all high voltages are absent in the system. Wait
at least 3 minutes before disconnecting any cables from the power supply or
the X-ray source.
Warning!
If the frequency of sparks increases, it is absolutely necessary to determine
the cause. A high frequency of sparks indicates a problem with the source
that can lead to the evaporation of the anode material and even a cracked
anode.
