XR 50
V3.1 | May 02, 2016
Chapter 5 – Maintenance
The major working parts of the XR 50 are easily accessible and can be replaced in a normally
equipped laboratory. This chapter describes the maintenance tasks that you may need to per-
form.
For prices and delivery of spare parts, please contact SPECS. If you have any questions con-
cerning these procedures or need further assistance, SPECS support is glad to help.
Warning—Harmful!
Products returned to SPECS for repair or maintenance should be free of haz-
ardous substances, e.g. radioactive, toxic, caustic or microbiological. If such
contaminants are present, they must be declared. A suitable form is included
at the end of this manual.
Note
SPECS offers a complete cleaning, overhaul and testing of your XR 50 upon request. This ser-
vice includes anode and filament replacement, water inlet replacement or refurbishment if
necessary, and thorough testing with a specification report.
5.1
X-Ray Source Check
If you remove the XR 50 for maintenance, you should place the source on a flat, clean surface.
The XR 50 can rest on the anode flange and water inlet/ outlet connectors or differential pump-
ing flange. Do not rest the source on the filament feedthrough!
If you remove the anode flange, the change in distribution of weight will cause the source to
rest on the head. In this case, make sure the filament is not damaged.
We recommend performing the following preliminary checks:
Check the resistance and appearance of the cathode.
Is the Al window in good condition? Are there holes or contamination from either the
sample or anode side? If the Al window has been damaged by a pressure difference, the
lost Al foil must be located, otherwise electrical contact between the anode and the groun-
ded XR 50 body can occur.
Is the anode centering bushing contaminated? Measure the resistance between anode
and body.
