XR 50
V3.1 | May 02, 2016
Is the anode centered or misaligned? If so, you will need to remove the copper cathode
cap. If you identify any damaged or malfunctioning parts, replace or refurbish these com-
ponents in order to avoid problems in the future.
5.2
Replacing the Anode
Two anodes are available, offering alternative excitations. These are mounted on the end of a
rod that is attached to the water cooling and HV flange at the back of the source. You can
remove this without needing to remove the entire X-ray source from the vacuum system.
Note
Avoid dust contamination on the anode. When high voltage is applied, local areas of high field
intensity, caused by specks of dust, can lead to sparking.
Danger—High Voltages Present!
It will take 3 minutes before all high voltages are absent in the system. Wait
at least 3 minutes before disconnecting any cables from the power supply or
the X-ray source.
Carry out the following procedure:
1. Remove the protection cap and water connections. Use compressed air to blow any excess
water out of the anode water cooling pipes.
2. Mark the position of the anode flange, as
indicated in the picture, e.g. using a pencil,
marker pen or stickers. The orientation of
the anode is important and you need to be
able to fit the new anode correctly.
3. Remove the anode water cooling flange (high-
lighted red).
4. Remove the anode (flange highlighted red).
Remember that the anode rod is almost the
entire length of the source, so you will need
sufficient space to withdraw the entire anode
assembly.
5. Using the old anode as a guide, find the correct orientation of the new anode. Note the fol-
lowing points:
