Anode
The XR 50 has a silver-tipped anode coated with two thin films for different excitation energies.
Using silver prevents the presence of Cu L
α
breakdown structures that could otherwise com-
plicate the XPS spectra are not expected when the active thin films wear out.
The main advantage of a dual anode is that operation with two different excitation energies
enables a rapid distinction of Auger electron lines from photoelectron structures.
Normally, the two active materials are aluminium and magnesium, although a variety of other
materials are available on request, including the option of two anodes with the same material.
The anodes are manufactured under carefully controlled conditions to guarantee an even and
pure coating with the intended thickness. UHV conditions during deposition ensure very low
levels of oxygen contamination, avoiding additional photoelectron structures and peak broad-
ening.
The following sections contain some operational and reference information about the anode:
Maximum power limits for different anode materials.
Excitation energies for common materials.
The effects of cross-talk between the two anodes.

Operating Limits
The UXC 1000 has default settings that allow safe operation for most anode materials (this
limit is however too high for zirconium anodes). Since some anodes can work at higher powers,
you can change the settings in the power supply. The Limits menu in the UXC 1000 allows you
to set the power limit for each anode. Please see the UXC 1000 manual for more details.
