Chapter 6: System Configuration
The RAC must be configured and calibrated before it can be put into
operation. This is done from a PC (field engineer’s laptop or notebook
computer) connected to the RACs USB service port, running the Sperry
Universal Service Instrument application (SUSI).
The present chapter assumes that you have successfully installed SUSI
and the Rudder Angle Calibrator USB device driver on your PC. If you
have not yet installed the SUSI and/or the device driver, refer to the sep-
arate SUSI Installation Guide for Field Service Personnel, doc no 056358.
The procedures described below are performed using the RAC applica-
tion controls inside SUSI’s application tab.
More advanced configuration features, accessible through SUSI’s termi-
nal and parameter tabs, are beyond the scope of this manual.
DANGER
Life danger through electrical shock
Certain alarm devices may operate with hazardous voltages, switched
by the alarm relay output contacts.
During configuration, the Rudder Angle Calibrator must be operated
with the housing open. Make sure that any external device or power
supply connected to the alarm relay outputs is de-energized and safe-
guarded against accidental switching-on.
WARNING
Risk of personal injury
To calibrate the feedback input, the rudder has to be moved over its
entire range. Always make sure that the steering gear is operative and
that the rudder may be actuated safely without any risk of personal
injury or damage to equipment, especially when the vessel is drydocked
and works are carried out by shipyard personnel.
Always inform the shipboard or shipyard personnel in charge of your
intention to actuate the rudder and obtain permission to operate the
steering gear for calibration purposes, before moving the rudder.
Note
The calibration procedures require that tasks are carried out at different
locations on the vessel.
If possible, use voice communication to instruct one or more helpers to
report the actual rudder angle indications as read from the rudder stock
scale and indicated at the RAIs respectively.
CAUTION
Risk of damage of electrostatic-discharge-sensitive components
The
Rudder Angle Calibrator
contains electrostatic sensitive components.
Electrostatic discharge may permanently damage components.
When configuring the
Rudder Angle Calibrator
, take precautions to prevent
electrostatic discharge. Avoid touching any of the electronic circuitry.
Note
This chapter is intended for authorized service personnel configuring or
servicing the Rudder Angle Calibrator. These tasks require a PC running
the Sperry Universal Service Instrument (SUSI) application.
SUSI is provided to authorized service personnel only and is generally
not available to end-customers.
