Telescopes gather light with their main objective lens and the eyepiece is used
to magnify it. In a refractor, the main lens is in the front and the eyepiece is in
the rear. Since astronomical telescopes point upward, the eyepiece points
straight down so a star diagonal is required for viewing. An astronomical tele-
scope used with a star diagonal provides a reversed image. An erecting
prism, which may be obtained for use with this telescope, will provide correct-
ly oriented images. But erecting prisms are not as sharp as a mirror star diag-
onal which is preferred for astronomical use.
This telescope is designed to come to focus when used with a star diagonal or
erecting prism. On rare occasions you may wish to view straight through with-
out a star diagonal or prism. This will provide a reverse image. To do this,
obtain the extension tube (#ET3).

USING THE TELESCOPE
It couldn’t be easier. With the telescope mounted
on the Stellarvue M2 or any other suitable mount,
insert the diagonal into the focuser and then the
eyepiece into the diagonal. Focus with the focus-
ing knobs.
Start using the lowest power eyepiece first. The
lowest power has the widest view making it easier
to locate distant objects in the telescope eyepiece.
If you want to boost power, do so only after you
have located and centered the object at low
power. Focus using the two focus knobs on the
focuser until the object is sharp. That is all there is
to it.
STELLARVUE FOCUSER
This telescope uses the standard Stellarvue dual speed focuser. The thumb
screw knob on the bottom is the focus lock.
Make sure this is loose during normal oper-
ation.
The large Allen set screw next to the focus
lock is the tension adjustment. If your
focuser drawtube slips when the telescope
is pointed skyward, use the supplied Allen
wrench to tighten this only enough so that
your heaviest accessories will not slip.
bINOVIEWING WITH THE SV80ED and SV80ED RAPTOR
The SVR80ED may be used with binoviewers allowing you to view with both
eyes open. This provides a stunning 3D effect when viewing open star clusters
and other deep space objects. Some people really enjoy binoviewing.
Refractors may be used with binoviewers if a special adapter is inserted in
between the binoviewer and the diagonal. These telescopes require such an
adapter and with it they will work with all commercial binoviewers.
