Web browsers on the Mac have limited Java Applet support
For consumers, this is a consideration if you are using the Download Applet, or any applet
that uses Java to JavaScript communication. For contributors, this is an issue if you want
to use the Upload Applet, or the Select User Applet (present in the Collaboration Server
and Records Management). The MacTransferComponent is recommended for use with the
Upload Applet however, the Select User Applet cannot be used. The Administration page
applets will work because they are not signed applets, and do not use Java to JavaScript
communication.
Web browsers on the Mac may not support DHTML
Selecting a browser on the Mac is contingent on the operating system used and what
functionality is preferred. The 7.0 look and feel uses DHTML that works with fifth
generation browsers. When using an earlier versions of the Mac browser that does not
support DHTML, the "Classic Layout" should be used. The table below provides
information on recommended browsers.
File formats on Mac have unique encoding
The file format used on OS 9 Mac files is not support by Windows or UNIX. This is an
issue if the user wants to upload OS 9 files that have custom fonts, or a considerable
amount of data in the "Resource Fork.” If a user has a lot of CAD drawings, or uses
Photoshop, Illustrator, or Frame Maker, the MacTransferComponent should be used.
Furthermore, Internet Explorer on the Mac sometimes performs a MacBinary encoding of
files before a file is uploaded and when the MacBinary encoding is used, IE does not
change the content type or extension. Applications that rely on the extension type for
processing may not recognize the MacBinary encoding. MacBinary encoded files are not
processed by the Refinery or the Dynamic Converter without a custom component.
