5-5 Installing the Processors and Heat Sinks

Avoid placing direct pressure to the top of the processor package. Always
remove the power cord fi rst before adding, removing or changing any
hardware components.
Notes:
Always connect the power cord last and remove it before adding, remov-
ing or changing any components. Make sure to install the processor into the CPU
socket before you install the CPU heat sink.
Intel's boxed Xeon CPU package contains the CPU fan and heat sink assembly. If
you buy the CPUs separately, use only Intel-certifi ed heat sinks and fans.
Inspect the Xeon 3200 CPU socket and make sure that the CPU plastic cap is
in place and none of the socket pins are bent. Otherwise, contact the retailer im-
mediately.
All graphics shown in this manual are for reference only. The components that
came with your serverboard may or may not look exactly the same as the pictures
shown in this manual.
Installing the CPU
A black PnP cap is attached to

the load plate to protect the CPU
socket. Press the load lever down
and away from the retention clasp
to release the load plate from its
locked position.
Gently lift the load lever to release

Use your thumb and your index

fi nger to hold the CPU at opposite
sides.
Align pin1 of the CPU (the corner

marked with a triangle) with the
notched corner of the CPU socket.
Find the corner of the CPU that

has a semi-circle cutout below a
gold dot (CPU key). This corner
should be aligned with the cutout
on the socket (socket key).
