6.3 Engine Trend Monitoring
Regular trend monitoring during stabilized flight is an essential part of the company’s
maintenance program. The early detection of changes in engine parameters can prevent more
costly repairs being necessary at a later time.
The PM shall record Engine Trend data during the First Flight of the day, after 5 minutes in the
cruise. Subject to Crew workload and safety.
6.4 Turbulent Air Penetration
Flight through light turbulence can be conducted without any changes to normal procedures.
Flight through moderate turbulence shall be conducted at or below maneuvering speed, with
autopilot engage, soft ride and half bank modes active.
Flight through severe turbulence should be avoided. The autopilot should be disengaged during
inadvertent severe turbulence penetration or it is recommended to use "basic pitch attitude
hold" mode..
When turbulence is anticipated or encountered and cannot readily be avoided, the following
techniques should be adhered to:
•
Check that passengers, baggage, and freight are secured.
•
Crew should agree the target speed to be maintained. Maneuvering speed is a
limitation not a target speed.
•
Select a heading that will take the aircraft through the area in the shortest possible time.
•
Ensure that adequate terrain clearance is maintained by flying at least 2000 ft above all
obstacles within 5 miles of track.
•
For flight in severe turbulence, disconnect the autopilot. Fly the aircraft manually.
Maintain attitude control with the attitude indicator, accepting altitude changes and
speed variations whilst keeping the attitude within safe limits. Roll must be closely
controlled, because if a large bank angle is allowed to develop, recovery can be
delayed by turbulence.
