DISTRESS COMMUNICATIONS AND ALERTING ATC TO EMERGENCIES
When a pilots or crew encounters an emergency or distress situation they can simply
call for assistance by contacting ATC on frequency in use or on Guard frequency
121,5 MHz / 234 MHz
a)
Distress MAYDAY (preferably three times)
is a serious and for imminent danger and require immediate assistance
–
in flight fire
–
mechanical failures
–
structural damage
This phrase commands radio silence on the frequency and this type of
communication has the highest priority.
b)
Urgency PAN-PAN (preferably three times)
Is a situation which is not immediately dangerous and requires prompt assistance.
Any conditions that may adversely affect the flight.
–
low level of fuel
–
system malfunctions
–
weather conditions
This communication has priority over all other communications except distress.
