3-23
Practice riding your ATV in an open
snow- or ice-covered area, at slow
speeds, before heading out on snow-
or ice-covered trails. Learn how your
ATV responds to steering and braking
on the type of terrain you will encoun-
ter on your ride.
Your eyes may be sensitive to sunlight
when you ride over snow or ice on a
bright, sunny day. Snow or ice reflects
more light into your eyes than dirt or
grass does. Tinted eye protection will
reduce the amount of light reaching
your eyes. Always use clear eye pro-
tection when riding at night. On over-
cast days, you may find it helpful to
use yellow-tinted eye protection.
RIDING IN REVERSE
To engage reverse gear, follow these
directions.
1. Stop the vehicle completely and
shift into neutral.
2. Squeeze the clutch lever and
depress the rear brake pedal.
3. Turn the reverse selection knob
clockwise and depress the gear-
shift lever twice.
NOTE:
•
Depress the rear brake pedal and
engage clutch partially if it is hard
to shift into reverse.
•
Check that the reverse indicator is
lit after shifting into reverse.
4. Look to make sure there is noth-
ing in your way behind you.
5. Release the brake pedal. Slowly
release the clutch lever and apply
the throttle.
WARNING
Failure to use extra care when
operating on slippery surfaces
such as hard-packed snow and ice
can be hazardous.
Failure to use extra care can
cause loss of traction or loss of
vehicle control. This could result
in an accident, including an over-
turn.
Do not operate on slippery sur-
faces until you have learned and
practiced the skills necessary to
control the ATV on such terrain.
Always use extra care on slippery
surfaces. Avoid snow- or ice-cov-
ered hills whenever possible.
WARNING
Improperly riding this ATV in
reverse can be hazardous.
You could hit an obstacle or per-
son behind you, resulting in injury.
When you select reverse gear,
make sure there are no obstacles
or people behind. When it is safe,
back up slowly.
