AXLE SHAFT
Remove
1: Remove the rear wheel. Refer to Replace the
Rear Tire/Wheel section for information regarding
removing the rear wheel.
2: Remove the brake drum.
3: Remove the 4 bolts holding the axle to the axle
tube.
4: Using a slide hammer, pull the axle from the
housing.
Note: It is likely that the bearing race assembly
will split apart with the race remaining in
the tube and the bearing on the axle. This
is normal and not a problem.
5: Remove the axle seal from the axle housing.
6: Reconnect the main positive and negative at the
batteries, remove the blocks from the wheels,
and test drive.
Install

AXLE BEARINGS
Note: The axle must be removed from the
transmission for this procedure. Refer to
Remove and Install Axle for information
regarding removing the rear axle.
Remove/Install
Note: Removing the bearing will damage the
bearing. Any time a bearing is removed it
must be replaced.
1: Remove the axle from the transmission.
2: Drill a 1/4 inch hole
about 3/4 depth of
the bearing retaining
ring. DO NOT DRILL
ALL THE WAY
THROUGH THE
RING!
3: Using a chisel, strike
the ring over the
drilled hole to split the ring.
4: Using an arbor press and proper bearing
separator, remove the bearing and discard.
5: Thoroughly clean the axle shaft and inspect.
Replace the axle shaft if any damage is found.
6: Lightly lube the ID of a new bearing and retainer.
7: Place new bearing/race assembly on the axle and
press down to shoulder.
8: Place new retaining ring and press down to
bearing,
9: If the axle is not to be immediately installed into a
vehicle, pack the bearing with grease and wrap it
in plastic to prevent corrosion.
This section is one section of a complete service
manual. Before starting any procedure, read all
warnings and instructions that are located in the
Service Guidelines chapter.
WARNING
Bearings may be frozen on the shaft and may explode
into small fragments while being pressed off of the
shaft.
The entire bearing should be enclosed in a steel
housing while being pressed off of the axle.
Failure to enclose the bearing may result in severe
personal injury.
