GENERAL GUIDELINES AND SAFETY
This section is one section of a complete service
manual. Before starting any procedure, read all
warnings and instructions that are located in the
Service Guidelines chapter.
WARNING
Do not ingest brake fluid or allow contact with skin
or eyes. Always wear protective clothing and a face
shield when working with or around brake fluid.
SKIN CONTACT:
Flush area immediately with water for several
minutes. If a rash or skin irritation develops, get
medical attention immediately.
EYE CONTACT:
Immediately flush the eye with water for 15 minutes
and call physician.
INGESTION:
Get medical attention immediately.
WARNING
Hydraulic brake system components must be kept
clean. Make sure your work area is free from dirt
and debris and will contain any brake fluid spills. Any
debris or contaminates left in the brake system could
lead to brake failure and result in property damage
and/or severe bodily injury.
WARNING
Taylor-Dunn does not currently supply asbestos
fiber-brake pads/shoes with any vehicle. However,
there is the possibility that the original brake pads/
shoes were replaced with aftermarket pads/shoes
containing asbestos. Since this possibility does exist,
the brake pads/shoes should be handled as if they
do contain asbestos.
Never use compressed air or dry brush to clean the
brake assemblies. Use an OSHA approved vacuum
cleaner or any alternate method approved by OSHA
to minimize the hazard caused by airborne asbestos
fibers and brake dust.
Do not grind, sand, break, or chisel the brake pads/
shoes, as this will cause unnecessary dust, possibly
releasing asbestos fibers in the air.
Always wear protective clothing and a respirator
when working on the brake pads/shoes or their
associated components.
Inhaled asbestos fibers have been found to cause
cancer and respiratory diseases.
Do not drive the vehicle if any worn or broken part is
detected in any part of the brake system. The cause
of the damage must be repaired immediately.
WARNING
When replacing or adding brake fluid:
•
Only use DOT 3 brake fluid from a new sealed
container.
• DOT 3 brake fluid is corrosive, will damage paint
finishes and may damage electrical components.
• Dispose of brake fluid in accordance with local
state and federal regulations.
• Read and follow all warnings on the brake fluid
container.
