Chapter 7: Installing the Batteries
7.1 Overview
This section contains procedures for mounting the batteries on the battery shelf or shelves. The
battery shelf can handle up to 190-Ah and is thermally isolated from the other compartments.
Battery types can vary widely. This section gives general guidelines in addition to the battery
manufacturer's instructions.
WARNING
!
WARNING! Battery systems present a risk of electrical shock and high short-circuit cur-
rents. Observe the following precautions when installing and maintaining Valve Regulated
Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries:
•
Remove all personal metal objects (watches and rings).
•
Use insulated tools.
•
Wear full eye protection and rubber gloves.
•
Observe circuit polarities.
•
Do not make or break live circuits. (Always turn off the the disconnect switch first.)
ALERT
!
ALERT! Disposal: Recycle lead acid batteries. Batteries contain lead and dilute sulfuric
acid. Dispose of in accordance with Federal, State and local regulations. Do not dispose
of in a landfill, lake, or other unauthorized location.
Four batteries fit into the shelf in the second compartment. When you unpack the batteries,
inspect them for any physical damage. If the batteries are damaged in any way, contact the
carrier. Check the packing slip to make sure you have received all the materials. All batteries
come fully charged, with an Open Circuit Voltage no lower than 12.48 volts per 12-volt unit.
Charge and bring batteries online independently of one another so that there is better control of
how and when they are getting charged. Service providers can get feedback on what kind of
battery backup time is available for each string.
ALERT
!
ALERT! Only qualified technicians may install and maintain this product.
These instructions presume you have verified that the Telect equipment being installed is
compatible with the rest of the system, including power, ground, circuit protection, signal
characteristics, equipment from other vendors, and local codes or ordinances.
