A.3 Making Changes To The Embedded Software Configuration
A.3.1 Enhanced Write Filter
The embedded operating system on the LCD15 uses a write-protected operating system partition. This allows the
OS to remain intact in the event of an accidental power failure. It also prevents the OS from becoming non-
useable in the field when users make changes. Any changes made to the OS while the partition is protected are
ignored on next reboot. The protected OS can be updated or changed with the use of a command line utility called
EWFMGR, which stands for Enhanced Write Filter Manager.
A.3.2 File Locations
There are two partitions on the 250 GB hard drive, drives C: and D:. The C: drive is the write-protected partition and this
is where the OS resides. The D: drive is the program and data partition and is not write protected. Any software installs
or changes should be installed on the D: drive. The Control Program and data are currently stored on this partition.
There are three reasons for storing the applications on the D: drive:
a) The C: drive has a limited size of only about 3.0GB;
b) The write filter uses memory to store its image, so the larger the drive, the more memory required;
c) Any application (i.e. .ini) files or settings can be stored on the non-protected volume, but would disappear
if they were on C: drive when rebooted.
All OS related programs are installed in C:\Program Files\
All user applications like eChart or Stored Data are stored in D:\ and D:\data respectively.
A.3.3 Installing Programs
The procedure for making software changes is as follows:
1. Turn on the unit as normal.
2. Install the software as normally done in Win 7, remembering that D: is where the software should go.
3. Go to START -> Programs -> Tools -> EWFMGR and select ‘commit.bat’. This will commit the new
changes to the image for next reboot.
4. Once the unit has entered Windows, there is a tray icon for EWFMGR that should be ‘GREEN’ to
indicate that the EWFMGR is active.
Making changes to the OS and committing them to the write filter can cause the OS to
become unstable. Only install necessary survey related programs. Once a change has
been committed, it is difficult to reverse.
Make sure that the MKIIIE is operated with the front control panel extended to allow for
proper airflow through the sounder unit.
