Glossary
µ-Law
Compression and decompression algorithm in accordance with US telephone standard. Non-linear compression results in a
dynamic range up to 72 dB with a resolution of 8 bit/sample.
16-Bit Expansion Slot
Slot for expansion cards for the ISA bus. Parallel 16-bit data transfer can take place via the bus by means of two in-line contact
strips.
4OP+
Special algorithm for generating FM sounds with four operators.
8 MBit
ROM memory size for PCM samples for Wavetable synthesis, equivalent to 1 MByte.
Adlib
One of the first soundcard manufacturers. The AdLib standard defines the address for generating FM sounds.
ADPCM
Adapted Differential Pulse Code Modulation. Compression and decompression algorithm with a compression ratio of 4:1. This
means that a 16-bit sample is compressed to form a 4-bit sample, thus enabling good quality samples to be transferred
extremely quickly via networks and telephone lines.
A-Law
Compression and decompression algorithm in accordance with Euro telephone standard. Non-linear compression results in a
dynamic range of up to 72 dB with a resolution of 8 bit/sample.
analog
Smooth transition between two statuses. All phenomena in the natural environment are analog.
Application
Another word for programs used by the user for communicating with the computer.
ATAPI-IDE
AT Attachment Packet Interface. Extension of the IDE standard designed to permit more rapid data communcation between
the processor and mass storage media such as hard disks and CD-ROM drives, also known as enhanced IDE.
BBS
This is Computer which can be accessed via a telephone line by means of a modem. BBS (Bulletin Board System) a company
service which can provide the user with rapid access to new drivers, utilities and information.
BIOS
Basic Input Output System, basic program for controlling the elementary procedures in the computer. The BIOS creates the
communication channels in the computer, and thus provides the connection between the individual system components.
BIOS Configuration
BIOS settings which are made with the aid of one or more screen pages. You can normally access the settings by pressing the
“del“ key when you boot the computer.
Booting
The process of starting the computer. A distinction is made between a warm boot, achieved by pressing the key combination
ctrl + alt + del, and a cold boot, which is achieved by pressing the reset button or by switching the computer off and back on
again.
Buffer
Intermediate memory designed to permit continuous and rapid flow of data.
Cache
Memory consisting of RAM modules in which commands and data are buffered so that they can be presented more quickly to
the processor.
Capacitor Microphone
Principle of an acoustic converter which converts soundwaves recorded from electrically polarised material (electret) into
electrical voltage via a thin membrane.
