SECTION 7
CESSNA
MODEL 172R (180 HP)
AIRPLANE & SYSTEMS DESCRIPTION
GROUND SERVICE PLUG RECEPTACLE
A ground service receptacle plug is integral to the power
distribution module and allows the use of an external power source
for cold weather starting, and during lengthy maintenance work on
electrical and avionics equipment. The receptacle is located on the
left side of the airplane near the firewall. Access to the receptacle is
gained by removing the cover plate.
I
The ground service plug receptacle provides the power that will
close the external power contactor and battery contactor only if the
master switch is turned ON. This is intended as a servicing aid
when the ship's battery power is too weak to close the battery
contactor. Under normal battery conditions the master switch will
only close the battery contactor.

NOTE
Use of the ground service plug receptacle for starting an
airplane with a "dead" battery or charging a "dead" battery
in the airplane is not recommended. The battery should be
removed from the airplane and serviced in accordance with
Maintenance Manual procedures. Failure to observe this
precaution could result in loss of electrical power during
flight.
NOTE
If no avionics equipment is to be used or worked on, the
avionics master switch should be turned off. If maintenance
is required on the avionics equipment, it is advisable to
utilize a regulated external power source to prevent damage
to the avionics equipment by transient voltage. Do not crank
or start the engine with the avionics master switch turned
on.
