3.07 High Frequency Interference
Inte
r
fe
r
ence may be t
r
ansmitted by a high f
r
equency
initiated o
r
stabilized a
r
c welding machine in the following
ways:
1. Direct Radiation:
Radiation f
r
om the machine can
occu
r
if the case is metal and is not p
r
ope
r
ly g
r
ounded.
It can occu
r
th
r
ough ape
r
tu
r
es such as open access
panels. The shielding of the high f
r
equency unit in
the Powe
r
Sou
r
ce will p
r
event di
r
ect
r
adiation if the
equipment is p
r
ope
r
ly g
r
ounded.
2. Transmission via the Supply Lead:
Without adequate
shielding and filte
r
ing, high f
r
equency ene
r
gy may be
fed to the wi
r
ing within the installation (mains) by
di
r
ect coupling. The ene
r
gy is then t
r
ansmitted by
both
r
adiation and conduction. Adequate shielding
and filte
r
ing is p
r
ovided in the Powe
r
Sou
r
ce.
3. Radiation from Welding Leads:
Radiated inte
r
fe
r
ence
f
r
om welding leads, although p
r
onounced in the
vicinity of the leads, diminishes
r
apidly with distance.
Keeping leads as sho
r
t as possible will minimize this
type of inte
r
fe
r
ence. Looping and suspending of leads
should be avoided whe
r
e possible.
4. Re-radiation from Unearthed Metallic Objects:
A majo
r
facto
r
cont
r
ibuting to inte
r
fe
r
ence is
r
e-
r
adiation f
r
om unea
r
thed metallic objects close to the
welding leads. Effective g
r
ounding of such objects
will p
r
event
r
e-
r
adiation in most cases.
3.08 Duty Cycle
The duty cycle of a welding powe
r
sou
r
ce is the pe
r
centage
of a ten (10) minute pe
r
iod that it can be ope
r
ated at a
given output without causing ove
r
heating and damage to
the unit. If the welding ampe
r
es dec
r
ease, the duty cycle
inc
r
eases. If the welding ampe
r
es a
r
e inc
r
eased beyond
the
r
ated output, the duty cycle will dec
r
ease.
!
WARNING
Exceeding the duty cycle
r
atings will cause the
the
r
mal ove
r
load p
r
otection ci
r
cuit to become
ene
r
gized and shut down the output until the
unit has cooled to no
r
mal ope
r
ating
tempe
r
atu
r
e.
CAUTION
Continually exceeding the duty cycle
r
atings
can cause damage to the welding powe
r
sou
r
ce and will void the manufactu
r
es wa
r
-
r
anty.
NOTE
Due to va
r
iations that can occu
r
in
manufactu
r
ed p
r
oducts, claimed pe
r
fo
r
mance,
voltages,
r
atings, all capacities,
measu
r
ements, dimensions and weights
quoted a
r
e app
r
oximate only. Achievable
capacities and
r
atings in use and ope
r
ation will
depend upon co
rr
ect installation, use,
applications, maintenance and se
r
vice.
