7. Use the X-Y knobs, joystick or Move stage tools to center the
features of interest in the field of view.
8. Adjust the Reflex aperture to mask the area of interest on the
sample.
9. Prepare to take data as you normally would for a typical
infrared transmission or reflection experiment.
Nomarski differential
interference contrast
The Nomarski differential interference contrast (DIC) technique is
an extension of visible polarization. It facilitates visual contrast in
samples where achieving visualization is difficult. The technique
uses crossed polarizers to produce a dark field. The Nomarski prisms
use differences in optical pathlengths and refractive indices through
the sample to enhance your view of the sample.
Note
DIC prisms are opaque in the infrared and must be removed prior to
data collection.
