Binning
The sensor binning function combines the values of multiple pixels and transfers the resulting value
to the PC. The volume of data to be transferred is reduced and higher camera frame rates are
possible. The captured image has a lower resolution but the same field of view compared to the full
resolution image. The binning mode is useful as a fast preview mode for high resolution cameras.
Color binning, as done by most of the color sensors, combines only pixels of the same color.
Few color- and all monochrome sensors simply combine neighboring pixels of the bayer pattern, the
color information is lost (mono binning).
DCU cameras provide binning of each two or four pixels. Binning of horizontal or vertical pixels can
be used independently.

Subsampling
The sensor subsampling function skips pixels during the sensor read out. The volume of data to be
transferred is reduced and higher camera frame rates are possible. The captured image has a lower
resolution but the same field of view compared to the full resolution image. The subsampling mode is
useful as a fast preview mode for high resolution cameras.
Color subsampling, as done by most of the color sensors, skips pixels according to the Bayer
pattern (see illustration). Few color- and all monochrome sensors ignore the bayer pattern, the color
information is lost (mono binning).
