7. Circulation massage
In unfavourable circumstances
inadequate circulation can result in
deposits of blood and lymph. This
can, for example, manifest itself by
swollen ankles and feet and cause an
unpleasant feeling of heaviness and
tension in the affected limbs.
The circulation massage program
makes an effective contribution to elim
-
inating pain caused by swelling and the
unpleasant feelings of heaviness and
tension. The physiological mechanisms
that could explain the effect of reducing
swelling by neuromuscular electrostim-
ulation are listed in a study
2
as follows:
1) activation of the muscle-vein pump
to accelerate the return venous flow
and to reduce accumulations of blood
in the veins, 2) activation of the venous
foot pump to accelerate the return
venous flow, 3) increase of the inter
-
stitial hydrostatic pressure to promote
resorption of fluids and 4) stimulation of
the lymphatic flow.
Frequency of use:
as required if swell-
ing appears
Stimulation intensity:
during the active
relaxation phase muscle twitching
should be clearly visible and strong
tetanic contractions should be visible in
the contraction phase; gradually increase the intensity
Placement of the electrodes:
along the lymphatic tracts (see above)
