Installing a hard disk drive
95
You may need to change some operating system and/or application software settings
after installing an additional hard disk drive.
Replacing a hard disk drive
This section provides information and instructions for replacing a hard disk drive in
Toshiba Magnia 3310/3310R servers with and without RAID controllers.
If the server has a RAID controller
The number of hard disk drives that can fail without affecting system operation depends
on RAID configuration of your server. If a hard disk drive fails, replace it as quickly as
possible and rebuild the disk array.
❖
If your server is equipped with a RAID controller configured for data redundancy and
a hard disk drive fails, the system will go into a “downgraded operational state” and
continue to run. However, if a second device fails, important programs or data may be
destroyed or lost.
❖
If your server is equipped with a RAID controller with a specified spare hard disk drive
(hot spare) in reserve, the server can run in a “downgraded operational state” with up
to two failed hard disk drives if the RAID array has had time to rebuild from the first
failure. However, if a third device fails, important programs or data may be destroyed
or lost.
If the server does not have a RAID controller
If the server is not configured with a RAID controller, check the status indicator of each
hard disk drive to determine which drive is faulty.
The server’s six hard disk drive bays are hot-swappable, allowing you to remove any
drive while the server is running.
TECHNICAL NOTE: If your server is equipped with a RAID controller, but Power
Console (Windows) or MegaRAID Manager (NetWare) is not installed, you can
replace a faulty hard disk drive while the server is running, but you will not be able
to recover (rebuild) the disk array without rebooting the system.
Use extreme caution when removing a hard disk drive. To avoid a severe
system failure, while the server is running never attempt to replace a critical
system drive (i.e., the drive with on which the Windows Partition is stored) or
data drive that is routinely accessed by the system, its applications and/or
users.
