Use and Safety
Wheel Locks
- Engage wheel locks on both wheels before entering the chair, leaving
the chair, leaning forward in the chair, or while being transported in an elevator or
wheelchair lift. When adjusted correctly, wheel lock should be embedded into the
tyre at least 3.2mm (1/8”) when engaged in lock position. Wheel locks are activated
by pushing the handle completely forward. To adjust locks, loosen nut on the
carriage bolt. Slide clamp toward rear wheel until lock shoe is embedded at least
3.2mm (1/8”) into tyre when handle is engaged in lock position. Tighten nut and bolt
to secure position. Inspect locking action BEFORE actual use.
Tyres
- Puncture proof tyres require minimal maintenance, but should occasionally
be cleaned with damp cloth. Replace tyres if they become cracked or severely
worn. For pneumatic tyres, check air pressure regularly and replace the tyres if they
are worn.
Front Castors
- castors should be inspected periodically and lubricated when
necessary. To lubricate, remove fork and grease castor stem bearings. Remove
the wheel from the fork and grease the wheel bearings. Reassemble wheel and
fork by tightening nuts until play remains, but the wheel rolls freely. When adjusted
correctly, the fork should also revolve freely. If the nut is too loose, the castor will
fl utter or shimmy, if it is too tight, the chair will be diffi cult to steer.
