CHECKING SPECIFIC GRAVITY OF ELECTROLYTE

Use a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of the
electrolyte.
If there is any variation among individual cell specific gravities, an
equalizing charge is required.
The normal specific gravity of electrolyte is 1.260 when the
temperature is 20°C. See the conversion table when the
temperature is other than 20°C.
For example, if the hydrometer reads 1.250 when the temperature
is 5°C, the specific gravity corresponding to the temperature of
20°C is 1.240. This value is lower than the specified value by 0.020.
In such a case, it is necessary to increase the specific gravity of
the electrolyte accordingly.
If the specific gravity of the electrolyte is very low, check the pole
plates and generator.
