F
F1 byte
Regenerator Section user channel byte. This byte is set aside for the user's purposes. It
can be read and/or written to at each section terminating equipment in that line.
F2 byte
Path user channel byte. This byte is used for user communication between path
elements.
F3 byte
Path user channel byte. This byte is allocated for communication purposes between
path elements and is payload dependent.
FAS
Frame Alignment Signal.
FC
Failure Count. The number of times a particular failure has been started.
FCS
Frame Check Sequence. The extra characters added to a frame for error detection and
correction. FCS is used in X.25, HDLC, Frame Relay, and other data link layer
protocols.
FCS Error (CRC)
Indicates that frames received do not pass the FCS check, which is a type of CRC
(Cyclic Redundancy Check). The FCS is a mathematical way to ensure that all the
frame's bits are correct without having the system examine each bit and compare it to
the original. In Ethernet networks, a 1 in 10
8
bit error rate is acceptable, although typical
Ethernet performance is 1 in 10
12
FDV
Frame Delay Variation
