Huil. The thickness of t h e g r p huil is between 6 and 7 mm
(% inch) on the topsides, 9 and 10 mm (
3
/
8
inch) below t h e
waterline and 12 and 13 mm (
1
/
2
inch) in the b o t t o m and keel
area. The lamination is made partly by s p r a y i n g c h o p p e d
glassfibre mixed with p o l y e s t e r and partly by laying up by
hand layers of woven r o v i n g s . The glassfibre content is
a p p r o x i m a t e l y 3 4 % . The huil is stiffened by g l a s s f i b r e angles
— stringers and ribs — and a f i x e d floor.
The ballast is bonded into t h e keel and c o n s i s t s of:
Lead (at t h e bottom) about 100 kg ( 220 Ibs)
Iron about 740 kg (1630 Ibs)
Polyster/sand min. 75 kg ( 165 Ibs)
Due to t h e w a y in which the ballast is b o n d e d i n , the keel
is both s t r o n g and resilient a n d has p r o v e d able t o w i t h s t a n d
very hard grounding — full s p e e d against rock — w h i c h
resulted in so little damage that a simple filling j o b was the
only repair required.
