Operation
Cruising speed
Avoid operation at full throttle, for best fuel economy.
We recommend a cruising speed which is at least 10%
below the maximum engine speed at full speed (full
throttle). The maximum engine speed will vary due to
propeller choice, load and sea conditions, but it should
be in the full throttle range.
Full throttle range:
D3-130/160A-A ..................................... 3800–4100rpm
D3-130/160i-A ...................................... 3800–4100rpm
D3-110i-A ............................................. 2700–3000rpm
If the engine does not reach the full throttle range, this
could be caused by a number of factors which are not-
ed in the “Fault tracing” chapter. If the engine speed
exceeds the full throttle range, select a coarser pitch
propeller. Ask your Volvo Penta dealer for advice.
Operation
Shifting between forward and reverse should be done at
idling. Shifting at higher engine speeds can be uncom-
fortable for passengers and cause unnecessary stress
on the stern drive, or cause the engine to stop.
Always do a forwards/reverse operation as follows:
1. Reduce engine speed to idle and let the boat more
or less lose way.
WARNING!
Never shift to reverse when the boat
is planing.
2. Move the control lever to neutral with a rapid, dis-
tinct movement. Make a brief pause.
3. Then move the control lever to reverse with a rapid,
distinct movement and increase engine speed.
IMPORTANT
! If the boat has twin engines, it is
important that both should be running during re-
versing maneuvers, to avoid the risk of water en-
try (via the exhaust pipe) into the stationary en-
gine.
