Engine, General
Serpentine Belt
WARNING!
Working with or going close to a running engine is a
saftey risk. Watch out for rotating components, espe-
cially the serpentine belt and pulleys.
Stop the engine before inspecting or servicing the belt.
Loose clothing, hair, fingers or a dropped tool can be
caught in the rotating parts of the engine and cause
serious personal injury.
The serpentine belt is a continuous-loop belt threaded
through the automatic belt tensioner
A
, alternator pul-
ley
B
, idler pulley
C
, power steering pump pulley
D
, raw
water pump pulley
E
, and circulating pump pulley
F
.
To determine if the belt is worn (stretched), check the
indicators located on the automatic tensioner housing.
When tick marks
G
and
H
align, the belt is stretched
and should be replaced. If
G
is betweeen
H
and
I
the
belt is good.
Also check the serpentine belt for:
•
Missing chunks
•
Dry rot
•
Exposed cords or excessive fraying
•
Oil or grease
Check the pulley surfaces for corrosion. A rough pulley
surface will quickly wear the belt.
If you suspect the belt needs replacing, refer to the
Workshop Manual
for the procedure or see your Volvo
Penta dealer.
Engine Alignment
Because of the special tools required, a Volvo Penta
dealer must do the engine alignment. This should be
done during off-season storage preparations.
NOTICE!
Failure to periodically check engine align-
ment may result in premature failure of the engine cou-
pler.
