2.2 Responsibility of the operator
Operators must receive training, demonstrate competence in the operation of the device, and demonstrate an
understanding of the applicable rules in the respective jurisdictions. Moreover, the operator should know all
applicable radiation safety guidelines and proper operating procedures prescribed by the system owner before
operating the device. They are also responsible for using the device safely and stopping the machine in the event of
any malfunctions or unsafe events.
While X-ray production is the primary hazard, precautions must be taken at all times, particularly during maintenance,
to guard against electrical and mechanical hazards.
2.3 Personal protective equipment
When the machine is properly installed, maintained, and operated, operators are not required to wear personal
dosimeters or special radiation protective clothing. When the scanner is operated as designed, it does not emit
detectable radiation higher than the natural limit of permissible exposure.
2.4 X-ray safeguards
To ensure that scans are conducted safely, the machine will not generate X-rays unless:
l
The access panels are securely in place, which is verified by interlock switches
l
The operator key is turned to the ON position
l
The photosensors have detected that an item entered the tunnel
l
The operator is standing on the safety mat (optional, configurable by a supervisor)
