IMPORTANT
Never reach inside the tunnel past the protective curtains while any of the following are true:
l
The system is in operation
l
The conveyor is moving
l
The X-ray indicator lights are red
l
The X-ray caution icon is displayed on the monitor
2.5 X-ray warnings
All scanners carry a number of X-ray warning signs, one visible to the operator, and one at each of the entrance and
exit openings. These X-ray warning signs are required under the authority of the REDA (Schedule II, Part IV, Paragraph
2 (h)) and must not be removed. If they deteriorate over time or become damaged, they must be replaced.
Replacement warning signs must comply with Paragraph 4 of the regulation.
Additionally, when X-rays are being emitted:

The X-ray indicator lights on the top of the scanner turn red
l
An X-ray caution icon is displayed on the monitor
2.6 Accidental radiation exposure
If someone is accidentally exposed to radiation, such as by reaching past the protective curtains inside the tunnel
while X-rays are being emitted:

The victim of the radiation accident should receive prompt and specialized medical attention (e.g. from a
radiation oncologist or a physician knowledgeable in the biological effects of ionizing radiation exposure to
humans). They should be accompanied to a hospital by someone who ensures that the hospital authorities are
made aware of the circumstances of the accident. Important information to note would be the voltage and
current at which the X-ray tube is operating, the duration of exposure, the area of the body exposed, and how
the exposure occurred.

An investigation should be undertaken regarding the circumstances of the incident, and an accident report
should be prepared and submitted to the appropriate radiation protection authority. A sample accident report
is attached to this guide.
