from connecting to excessive numbers of IP addresses, such as
with a file sharing application like BitTorrent. A “normal” web
page request can generate up to 10 legitimate sessions, so we
do not recommend setting these limits below 50.
VLAN Trunk
The VLAN ID of each subscriber can be tracked using 802.1q
VLAN Trunk
. This allows the
Controller to processing incoming VLAN tags for monitoring and authentication purposes and
correctly tag outgoing traffic so those subscribers receive traffic for their VLAN only. A typical
implementation would be a hotel with a VLAN ID for each guest room. All VLAN packets are
broadcast from port one, so VLAN port separation must be enforced by a VLAN switch.
Assigning VLAN IDs
VLAN Trunk supports up to 256 incoming VLAN IDs, IDs can be in the 0-4094 range. For
example, in a hotel you might use VLAN IDs 101-110 for the first floor, 201-210 for the
second, etc. You must have VLAN switches to tag this incoming traffic. The Gateway
Controller does not tag untagged LAN packets.
ID Selection
By default the Controller only supports VLAN IDs 1-10. In order for this
system to work you must know the VLAN IDs you are using, program
them into your VLAN switches, and then enter them into
ID Selection.
Allow Untagged Packets
To allow both VLAN tagged and untagged packets on the LAN
port, select Allow Untagged Packets. Without this option enabled, the
Controller will only accept tagged packets on the LAN port once VLAN
Trunk is enabled.
Tracking Connections Using VLAN IDs
When VLAN is enabled, each subscriber connection is automatically associated with the VLAN
ID. You will see the VLAN ID in these reports:
System Status - Current User Table
SysLog – Subscriber Trace
SysLog – Logged In Users
External Portal Page Subscriber Info: after MAC ADDR: VLANID=[VLANID#]
RADIUS Accounting
You can receive the VLAN ID as Acct-Multi-Session-ID by
configuring
Security – RADIUS - Acct-Multi-Session-Id for
client VLAN ID – Enable
.
