For some VPN connections, subscribers may need access to a routable public IP
address, rather than a NATed LAN address. Configuring VLAN Static IP allows
subscribers to reserve a public IP from the ISP for a limited time. You will need one
or more extra public IP addresses from the ISP to use this feature. Prior to
authentication, these subscribers are treated like any other subscriber with a private
LAN IP address. After authentication, the subscribers are visible in the controllers
WAN side with the Static IP Address configured. They are not NATed by the controller.
This feature can be utilized by subscribers using a VPN connection that does not
support NAT Traversal, or multiple subscribers using the same VPN server at the same
company. Subscribers can get the available static IP addresses automatically from
the Static IP address List page. The page contains all the correct IP properties, and
the available addresses are displayed automatically.
Subscribers can also receive the Static IP addresses automatically via DHCP.
Subscribers who request a static IP address will be redirected to a page with a
message and configurable timer. During the timer duration, their computer will
receive a public static IP via DHCP. The length of the static IP DHCP lease is
configurable. The link to the configuration page appears on the Local and Custom
login pages automatically, or you can put the post form on a portal page using the
HTML code from
DHCP VPN External HTML Page Code
. Subscribers will receive an
error if all of the available static IP addresses are in use. After receiving the static
IP address via DHCP, the subscriber must login normally according to the security
settings. If you do not wish these users to login, you can put the VPN Static IPs in
Destination IP Passthrough
table.
Note: W hen a subscriber clicks on the VPN Static IP link, or the post form is subm itted to the
Controller from a portal page, a Static IP address is reserved for that MAC Address for two
hours (or as configured) whether the subscriber is logged in or not. Only one IP is assigned
per MAC.
