Connecting to a Turntable
If your TL5.5 Series II preamplifier is equipped with the optional internal Phono Stage,
you can connect the Phono/Aux 2 input of the preamplifier to the cables from your
turntable. If a direction indicator is printed on the cable make sure that the cable is
connected to the source and the Phono Stage in the appropriate direction (arrows flowing
in the direction the signal will travel, i.e. from the source to the phono stage.) It is also
important that the left and right channels from the source components are connected to
the corresponding left and right channels of the Phono/Aux 2 input. Also connect the
Ground wire from your turntable arm to the Ground pin on the back of the TL5.5 II
preamplifier.
Connect the Tape input channels to the preamplifier
.
To take advantage of the Tape
Monitor capability of the preamplifier, connect the
Tape In
on the tape deck(s) to the
Record
Out
connectors on the preamplifier, in addition to connecting the
Tape
connectors on the
preamplifier to the
Line Out
connectors
on your tape deck(s). For later identification and
monitoring of the taped source, it is strongly advised to connect the primary tape deck to
Tape In
Connect the Surround Sound Processor to the preamplifier
. To take advantage of
the processor unity gain loop capability, connect the
Front Left and Right outputs of
your home theater preamplifier processor to the left and right channels of any input on
the preamplifier, and set that input for Unity Gain by holding the Mon/Proc button
and pressing the button for that input simultaneously. Please refer to the programming
instructions in the Programming section of this manual for more details on how to set
Unity Gain.
Connect the power amplifier to the output of the preamplifier
.
Before making any
connection to the power amplifier make sure that the power amplifier is completely
powered down. Any connection to a power amplifier that is powered up can result in
damage to the power amplifier and to rest of the system, and/or a loud hum from the
loudspeakers.
The interconnect cable between the amplifier and the preamplifier links the left and right
input channels of the power amplifier to the left and right outputs of the preamplifier.
The ultra low output impedance of the preamplifier is easily capable of supporting long
interconnects up to 35 feet or longer, and can also easily drive any amplifier (and sub
woofer) or cable load.
There are one set of RCA output connectors and one set of balanced output connectors
available from the preamplifier, and all are operational at the same time. You can connect
your amplifier(s) to the preamplifier using either balanced cables or RCA cables.
Although the preamplifier can easily drive extremely low impedances, please be aware that
the single-ended output of the TL5.5 preamplifier is 6dB lower in gain than the balanced
output. If you have any questions about this then you should contact either your dealer or
the manufacturers of your amplifiers, or contact the VTL factory customer service
department.
