Inspection of battery
If the UPS is out of operation for a prolonged period, maintenance-free batteries, for example, must be recharged at
three-monthly intervals. Observe the instructions of the battery manufacturer!
The instructions fort he battery are attached in the appendix of this manual.
CAUTION:
Acid vapour emitted in the battery compartment are corrosive and can cause injury upon contact with
the skin, eyes and when inhaled.
The applicable protective measures must be complied with in accordance with the safety regulations of
VDE 0510, Part 2.
When using an open battery the electrolytic level must be inspected. If it has reached its lower level, the battery must be
refilled with distilled water according to DIN 43530 part 4. The battery must be kept clean and dry in order to prevent
leakage current. Plastic-components of the battery, especially the cell compartments, may only be cleaned with pure
water. Every three months the measuring and logging shall include the following:
-
Battery voltage, if possible the voltage of each cell / block
-
(If applicable)The electrolyte temperature of the block batteries.
If applicable, the following items must be checked and logged every year according to DIN 43539 part 1 and special
inspections are to done according to VDE 0108:
-
Density of electrolyte
-
Voltage of all cells / blocks of battery
-
Quality of bolted fastening
Additional checks with automatic test equipment are not permitted, except the written approval of the battery manufac-
turer.
NOTE:
In case the battery voltage is out of tolerance and/or charging is not successful, the Service-
Department should be contacted.
7.3.1 Information about battery operation
(…acc. Association of European Accumulator Manufacturers, EUROBAT)
Environmental operation-temperature
The temperature-correction factor for calculating the capacity of the battery is set to 0.006 if the battery-manufacturer
does not specify a different value (see also chapter 18.8 IEC-Draft-896-2).
Battery lifetime
The lifetime of sealed lead-acid batteries decreases by operation at higher temperatures than +20°C. The following table
shows the lifetime reduction at given temperatures. Three types of batteries with a given lifetime specified at +20°C are
shown:
Temperature
Type A
(Nominal lifetime 10-12 years)
Type B
(Nominal lifetime 6-9 years)
20°C
