Grounding and Lightning Considerations
2.3
GROUNDING AND LIGHTNING CONSIDERATIONS
Lightning protection is important and must always be considered when installing the
HPSA-7100-R. The HPSA-7100-R has protection that protects the electronics from
transient voltages. However, additional steps may be required.
All cables entering the electronics enclosure should be properly grounded according to
Country, National, or Local electrical codes. Lightning and surge protection should be
included in the design and implemented during installation.
The following four rules should be designed for and implemented to minimize damage
from electrical surges due to lightning strikes:
1. Protect all cable runs by placing them inside corrosion resistant metallic pipes.
2. Ground all pipes, observing low RF impedance.
3. Connect all cables to surge suppressors (MOV to ground).
4. Use a ground mat in sandy areas.
Additionally, install traffic related ground rod inspection boxes for ground rods installed in
areas where vehicular traffic is present.
2.4
TEMPERATURE CONSIDERATIONS
2.4.1
Speaker Array
The speaker array operates within an ambient temperature range of
-40°F to 140°F (-40°C
to +60°C)
2.4.2
Batteries
Extremes in temperature shorten battery life and decrease performance. Maintenance
schedules must take temperature and temperature variations into consideration when
determining battery replacement. Under normal use, in moderate temperatures, the
batteries have a useful life of 3
–
5 years.
2.4.3
Amplifier
As a safety measure, the amplifiers include a security shutoff at a temperature of
approximately 95
o
C (203
o
F). The time it takes to reach this temperature will vary
depending on the ambient temperature and the starting temperature of the heat sink.
2.5
MINIMUM MOUNTING HEIGHT REQUIREMENTS
Minimum mounting height varies depending on the installation site and authorities having
jurisdiction. The guidelines listed below were taken from several U.S. standards.
However, the site designer and the installer must take into consideration all local, regional
and national codes and standards may apply.
Refer to Appendix B for information regarding the Omni-directional pole mount Horn
Array height installation.
HPSA-7100-R batteries must be checked at least once every three months
(minimum).
