If, for instance, a grinding disk catches or locks in the workpiece the edge of the grinding,
which enters into the workpiece can be caught up and thus the grinding disk can break
out or cause a recoil. The grinding disk then moves towards or away from the person
operating it depending on the wheel direction of rotation at the locking point. In this
process grinding disks can also break.
A recoil is the result of a faulty or unintended use of the power tool. It can be prevented
by appropriate precautions as described below.
a) Hold the power tool securely and place your body and your arms in a position
in which you can absorb the recoil forces. Always use the additional handle, if
it is present, to ensure you have the greatest possible control over the recoil
forces or reaction moment when starting up the tool.
The person operating it can control the recoil or reaction forces by means of
appropriate precautions.
b) Never place your hand close to the rotating insertion tools.
The insertion tool can move across your hand in the event of a recoil.
c) Ensure your body does not enter the area in which the power tool will be moved
in the event of a recoil.
The recoil drives the power tool in the opposite direction of the movement of the
grinding disk at the locking point.
d) Work particularly carefully in the areas of corners, sharp edges etc. Prevent the
insertion tool from rebounding and getting stuck.
The rotating insertion tool tends to get stuck when working on corners, sharp
edges or when it rebounds off a surface. This causes a loss of control or a recoil.
e) Do not use chain blades or serrated saw blades.
Such insertion tools frequently cause a recoil or a loss of control over the power
tool.
Special safety directions for grinding and abrasive cutting
a) Only use the abrasive devices that are permitted for your power tools and the
protective hood provided for this abrasive device.
Abrasive devices which are not intended for the power tool cannot be shielded
sufficiently and are unsafe.
b) The protective hood must be securely attached to the power tool and be set in
such a way that the highest safety levels are achieved, i.e. the small possible
portion of the abrasive device is openly pointing towards the person operating
it.
The protective hood should protect the person operating the tool from fragments
and accidental contact with the abrasive device.
