Introduc on
The thermal camera MEDICAS allows to measure the temperature of the human skin and is therefore effec ve
in detec ng the body temperature increases for instance due to a virus infec on.
MEDICAS has accuracy of the measurement ± 0.3 °C, according to reference blackbody. This accuracy is always
guaranteed only when measuring the temperature near the black body, i.e. in similar distance from the camera
as the distance between black body and the MEDICAS.
The camera is designed to con nuously calibrate the measured temperatures by measuring the temperature of
the black body shipped with the camera. This black body needs to be placed in the view of the camera in specific
distance based on the camera lens focus distance. The posi on of the Blackbody then needs to be set in the
thermal image by se ng BLACK BODY ROI (region of interest) from the Func ons menu.
The system offers a digital video output. Both visible and thermal spectrum images are displayed on the screen
at the same me.
While measuring the human body with the MEDICAS thermal camera and correctly evaluate the results of the
measurement, it is necessary to follow instruc ons wri en in this manual. You also need to understand the
theory behind evalua ng normal human body temperature.
6.1 Correct measurement of the human body temperature
Normal human core body temperature (normothermia, euthermia) is the typical temperature range found in
humans. The normal human body temperature range is typically stated as 36.5–37.5 °C (97.7–99.5 °F).
Human body temperature varies. It depends on sex, age, me of day, exer on level, health status (such as illness
and menstrua on), what part of the body the measurement is taken at, state of consciousness (waking, sleeping,
sedated), and emo ons. Body temperature is kept in normal range by thermoregula on, in which adjustment
of temperature is triggered by the central nervous system.
6.2 Methods of measurement
Taking a person’s temperature is an ini al part of a full clinical examina on. There are various types of medical
thermometers, as well as sites used for measurement, including:
In the rectum (rectal temperature)
In the mouth (oral temperature)
Under the arm (axillary temperature)
In the ear (tympanic temperature)
On the skin of the forehead over the temporal artery
