The silence feature is only for your convenience and will not correct a problem. Always 

check your home for any potential hazards every time an alarm sounds.

Test your smoke alarm once a week. If the alarm fails to test correctly, replace it immediately! 

If the alarm is not working properly, it will not alert you to a problem.
