Data streams
If the application software you are using on your Sun produces
an Interpress data stream, then conversion is not necessary and a
front end is not required. However, if you are using an
application that produces PostScript data streams, a front end is
required to convert the PostScript data into .IMG files.
Color specification
Both Interpress and PostScript masters may contain full color
specification, in which case full color to highlight color mapping
is required. For Interpress, the 4890 performs the color mapping
automatically. For PostScript, the front end performs the color
mapping automatically when it converts PostScript data to .IMG
files. If printer colors are specified through the use of a facsimile
palette, then the colors print exactly as specified.
Ethernet with TCP/IP protocol
Communication protocols
If a Sun workstation is connected to an Ethernet LAN using a
TCP/IP protocol, the TCP/IP must be converted on the front end
to XNS protocols before the data reaches the printer.
Data streams
A front end is already required in this configuration to connect
TCP/IP to XNS. The front end also converts PostScript data
streams to .IMG files, which is necessary if the application
software being used produces output in PostScript. If the
application software produces output in Interpress, the front end
connects TCP/IP to XNS and passes the Interpress data streams
through without further conversion.
Color specification
Both Interpress and PostScript masters may contain full color
specifications, in which case full color to highlight color mapping
is required. For Interpress, the 4890 performs the color mapping
automatically. For PostScript, the front end performs the color
mapping automatically when it converts PostScript data to .IMG
files. If printer colors are specified through the use of a facsimile
palette, then the colors print exactly as specified.
