Ethernet Address
The Ethernet Address is a unique address that
identifies a device on a network. The Ethernet
Address is built into the device when it is
manufactured. The Ethernet Address consists of six
bytes of information and is expressed as
hexadecimal numbers with the bytes separated by
colons.
(Example: 00:00:08:D4:05:14)
EtherTalk
AppleTalk protocol governing Ethernet
transmissions. Also the Apple Computer Ethernet
adapter and drivers. The first implementation,
Phase 1, was replaced by Phase 2 in 1989.
External Print Box
Also referred to as an External Print Support Box.
A third party device connected to the printer
parallel port in support of a protocol such as
Banyan VINES.
file server
A network environment in which the nodes
communicate with a file server, and not directly
with other nodes. NetWare 3.12 and Banyan
VINES are file server networking products.
frame
A group of data sent through the network. Also
called a "packet" or a "message". There are several
different types of frames. The data is arranged
differently in different types of frames. Nodes on a
network must be set up for the same Frame Type in
order to communicate.
FTP
An acronym for File Transfer Protocol. A TCP/IP
application protocol governing file transfer.
Full Duplex
A method of transmission that can send and receive
at the same time.
Gateway
A hardware method by which dissimilar networks
exchange information.
