3.2.11.2 DRA EDFA and Raman Amplifier Optimization
For a DRA system that has an EDFA amplifier preceded by a Raman amplifier, both the EDFA and the Raman gain are pre-set at
the factory to give optimal gain setting for the EDFA, with maximum gain setting for the Raman. By default, both amplifiers are
turned on when the system is powered up.
The EDFA may be configured as either a pre-amplifier, or as a booster-amplifier. To achieve the optimum driving condition for
the DRA, for an EDFA as pre-amplifier maintain the EDFA "Gain/Input Power" at the optimal setting 22dB/<-5dBm. For an EDFA
as booster-amplifier, maintain the EDFA "Gain/Input Power" at 22dB/+20dBm.
For either EDFA configuration, first verify the EDFA "Gain/Input Power", then adjust the Raman gain to provide optimal driving
conditions for the EDFA. Increasing the Raman gain, for example, increases the Raman pump power and thus the input power
to the EDFA.
You can verify EDFA gain and EDFA input power using the
show edfa
command. Use the EDFA
control output gain
command to restore the default 22dB EDFA gain, if necessary. Use a
show raman
command to find the current Raman gain
setting, then use the Raman
control output gain
command to adjust the Raman gain until the EDFA is at its optimal
condition.
