Loading Messages
If you press RETURN at a terminal connected to a serial port during the first minute after the
unit is powered up (after the self test has completed), network loading messages will be
displayed. If you want to see the sequence of message responses that occur during the load
process, follow the steps in Section D.4.1 after power on. (Note that when the Terminal Server
720 is loading from a Memory card, you do not see any messages, and you cannot access the
terminal server.)
D.4.1 Example Network Load Procedure
The following example load procedure assumes that a terminal is physically connected to a
serial port and that the unit is loading software from the network. Press RETURN every 5 - 10
seconds to observe all of the message types.
Complete these steps:
1. Power-up the terminal and press RETURN several times to autobaud the port to the baud rate of
the terminal. Type any character (except the RETURN key or the CTRL-T command); the port
light should go out. (This exercise is useful when debugging cables.) If the server appears to
have selected a port speed (LED goes on), but you do not see any response when you press the
RETURN key, type the BREAK character to re-initialize the port autobaud sequence, then press
RETURN several times.
2. Observe a message similar to the following one:
Terminal Server, Type 76, Rev x.xx.x
Ethernet address 08-00-87-xx-xx-xx, port x
Initializing...
This message appears for approximately 10 seconds. You can compare the Ethernet
address displayed with the equipment label on the unit.
3. Next, several messages similar to the following appear:
Terminal Server, Type 76, Rev x.xx.x
Ethernet address 08-00-87-xx-xx-xx, port x
Requesting network load service
Only the last line is different. This message lasts for approximately 20 to 60 seconds (20
seconds for each load/dump configuration that you have enabled; there is no indication
that the unit is trying another load/dump configuration - the message stops when a service
offer is received). If you do not receive the next message after this time elapses, you are not
configured on a load server. Install software on a load server using the procedures
described in the Software Installation Guide supplied with your software kit.
