Inspect Wheel Drive Components
•
The wheel drive motor bearings are pre-lubricated
and no further lubrication is necessary.
•
The wheel drive pulley is secured to the drive mo-
tor shaft by a combination of either a key or D
slot and setscrew. The setscrew is secured with
removable locktite to prevent loosening. Annu-
ally confirm setscrew is secure.
•
The wheel drive belt is a urethane stretch belt de-
signed to provide constant tension through the life
of the belt. No adjustment is required. Inspect the
drive belt annually for proper tracking and ten-
sion. A properly tensioned belt will turn the wheel
immediately after power is applied with no visible
slippage during start-up.
•
If slippage is detected, replace wheel drive belt
immediately because it likely to become clogged.
Contact a Johnson Controls Field Service Office
to order replacement belt. Refer to service manual
for belt replacement instructions.

Cleaning the Wheel
The wheel should be protected by an ASHRAE 30%
filter to keep dust and dirt from the heat transfer sur-
face. If the wheel becomes dirty, it may be cleaned by
blowing out the unit with compressed air (20 psig max-
imum). In cases of severe uncleanliness, the wheel may
be removed from the cassette and washed with flowing
water. Wheel removal procedures are outlined below:
1. Disassemble air handler panels and bulkheads
only enough to gain access to front or rear of wheel
where necessary or where there are no doors.
2. Support the wheel from the bottom.
3.
If the unit is equipped with an external flanged
bearing, loosen the allen screws in the bearing
housing that keeps the shaft affixed in the hori
-
zontal plane on both bearing, front and back. Re-
move the shaft clips at the face of the hub from
both sides of the shaft. Unbolt one post complete-
ly and remove post with bearing completely out.
Remove the shaft. Roll the wheel carefully out.
4. If the unit is equipped with an internal bearing,
unbolt the shaft screw on both sides of the shaft.
Unbolt one post completely and remove post. Re-
move the shaft clips at the face of the hub from
both sides of the shaft. Remove the shaft. Roll the
wheel out carefully
5. With the wheel out, wash the media carefully with
water. Once clean, allow the media to dry out for
several hours or days if necessary.
6. Reinstall using the reverse procedure. Run the
unit. It may take several hours for the desiccant
to dry out and for the wheel to perform normally.
