Make piping connections
After the unit is leveled, place wedges or shims under each corner to solidly support the unit in
this position while connecting and hanging the piping, adjusting the connections, and checking for
correct alignment.
Compressor refrigerant piping and system external piping are factory-installed on all units. On
units where the chiller refrigerant piping must be removed for any reason, the piping must only be
completed under the direct supervision of the Johnson Controls representative.
Evaporator freeze damage
WARNING
Failure to follow required freeze protection protocols can void the warranty.
CAUTION
The chiller must remain powered on whenever the ambient temperature drops below 32°F (0°C) and
water must be in the evaporator. To avoid damage, ensure the correct heater option for 0°F (-18°C)
minimum ambient temperature or -20°F (-29°C) minimum ambient temperature is installed, based on
the lowest expected ambient temperature at the chiller location.
During operation, the glycol freezing point must also be below the lowest expected refrigerant
temperature.
If the YVAM chiller is exposed to subfreezing ambient temperatures at any time during its life, it
is critical to protect against evaporator freeze damage. The YVAM chiller can be equipped with
features to prevent freeze damage to the evaporator. These features require continuous power
to the chiller control panel, chilled fluid circuit pumps, and evaporator heaters to prevent damage
from freezing. If continuous power cannot be guaranteed or if chilled fluid flow cannot be provided
during periods of subfreezing ambient temperatures, then one of the following freeze protection
protocols must be followed:
CAUTION
When glycol is installed in the evaporator, the glycol concentration must ensure that the freeze point is
below the lowest expected ambient temperature at the chiller location to avoid evaporator damage.
• An appropriate freeze protection fluid selected for the lowest possible ambient temperatures
must be used in the chilled fluid circuit.
Or
• The fluid in the evaporator must be drained as follows:
a. Remove power to the waterbox heaters.
b. Close the chilled fluid circuit isolation valves.
c. Drain the evaporator.
d. Leave the evaporator drain valves open.
