GENERAL
What are YSI Drinking Water (DW) Sondes designed to do?
YSI DW sondes are specially designed for the monitoring of long term trends in drinking water distribution systems in
flow cell (slipstream or side stream) applications. Typically, “long term” would mean deployments of at least 60 days
with no maintenance of the sensors except for the possible need for in situ calibrations without removing the sonde
from the site.
What types of DW sondes are available?
Two types of sondes (shown in the picture below) can be purchased for drinking water applications -- the 6920DW
which operates from 8 internal AA batteries and the 600DW-B which operates 4 internal AA batteries.
`
What drinking water parameters can be monitored with DW sondes?
For the 6920DW, typical parameters to be monitored are temperature, conductivity or specific conductance, pH, ORP,
turbidity, and free chlorine. The 600DW-B measures all of these parameters except for turbidity. The 6920DW is
also capable of measuring ammonium, nitrate, and chloride with ion selective electrode (ISE) sensors, but their use is
not recommended for long term monitoring in flow cell applications due to the potential for large drift. In addition, the
6920DW can measure either Rhodamine WT or chlorophyll INSTEAD OF turbidity, but these analytes are not
expected to be important for most drinking water applications. Potential users should note carefully that the DW
sondes will NOT MEASURE DISSOLVED OXYGEN as explained in the next section.
